Which bright spark came up with the idea that Ledbury’s green spaces are left to grow unchecked for ten full weeks, during the main growing season and at just the time when people want to be out enjoying them?
The summer grass cutting schedule (see here) has been announced by Herefordshire Council, down to just two cuts over the summer: on 2 June, and sometime between 17 and 25 August.
You don’t have to be a keen gardener to spot the problem here. Throughout the whole summer period of June, July and most August, Ledbury’s green spaces are going to be left to grow… and grow. This will effectively render them off-limits to the community.
Bizarre too is the idea that they get cut just in time for the schools to go back at the end of the August.
The grass needs mowing at regular intervals through the summer, with one cut at least to coincide with the start of the school holidays and one at the start of August.
Postscript 10 June 2014. The Council contractors were meant to have come to Ledbury last week and done a 'full cut'. Judging by public reaction, they didn't do a very thorough job. All the playing fields left two feet high, paths still overgrown, many road junctions obscured by tall vegetation. Not good.
